Sonia Dancey
I’m a first-year medical student at the University of Ottawa, with a keen interest in women’s health, dancing and watching cake-making videos. I got involved in this initiative because COVID-19 has opened my eyes to the struggles that seniors face, especially those living in long-term care facilities. I am fortunate that my grandparents live close-by and growing up they played a big role in my life. From baking Christmas cookies, to summertime picnics, walking to the neighbourhood pool or cheering me and my sister on at dance performances – my grandparents were always there for me and these memories are forever close to my heart. I understand how difficult physical distancing has been for families and it has been a big adjustment for my family to spend birthdays and holidays via video chat, but we are lucky to have this technology to bring us together.
I hope that the Ride to Connect team can raise funds to provide families with the same access to technology and help them stay connected despite the barriers they may face. Unfortunately, the training wheels on my bike prevent me from riding long distances, as such I will be lacing up my sneakers to run for the cause!!
