As a community family physician, I have the privilege of caring for patients from cradle to grave, through good times and bad. Lately, with the world in turmoil due to the COVID-19 pandemic and people of all ages being forced to stay home and away from loved ones, the importance of technology has come to the forefront.

I recently experienced firsthand the positive effect technology and technological literacy can have on a family.

A patient of mine, a thriving 100 year old man living in an assisted-living retirement home, was given a smartphone and a tutorial book by his grandchildren. Over the span of a few weeks he was able to master the basics of using his new phone. I then witnessed the joy in his face when he was able to communicate with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The initiative put forth by Ride to Connect is important and inspirational. The impact of technology for our vulnerable population has never been greater.

Loneliness has always been a well-known issue in our elderly community but has only been made more painfully common with the physical and social distancing brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Be they residents of long-term-care or retirement homes forced into seclusion, or single seniors living independently, they all would benefit from the social contact which the virtual interactions which smart phones and tablets can offer.

Volunteer coaches can help in accessing social media..

Additionally, savvy seniors will be able to avoid the tactics of dishonest online predators who often target them.

Their new skills can open a whole new world of interests to further enrich their lives.
